New toys for the boys (and girls).

About 2 weeks ago i took delivery of a new shiny iPad courtesy of Tosh Computers. (How geeky is that/).
Out of the box it was all shiney and new with a cable and power connector (the cable doubles to allow connecting to iTunes on my PC)

After smearing up the glass screen a few times getting to come to grips with the new (for me anyway) technology I logged onto iTunes to find some apps. Am still working through the apps to find ones that would be useful to me and to give us the tools we wanted to take with us on our trip to Europe in a couple of months time.

The decision to purchase was around wanting to take a 'computer' with us on our trip. After weighing up the pros and cons the iPad appeared to fit our requirements more closely than a notebook or net-book. We haven't been disappointed as it is so easy and convenient to use and the apps we have accumulated are job specific and ultra fast loading.

The ebook facility is great and I have already read one of the free books that comes with iBooks (history of James Cook no less) and found it very easy to read. So will be able to load up with books to take on the trip. Whitcoulls have just released their online book store so have a few books lined up for downloading prior to the trip. IBooks are not available in NZ as yet (apart from the freebies).

One app I found was a complete set of NZ marine charts that are downloaded onto the iPad so you don't need to be online to use them. The app essentially makes the iPad a marine chart plotter. This is awesome in high definition and the GPS is very fast.

Have added a screen shot which was taken with my camera so there is some distortion.

Needless to say Spider Solitaire and Sudoka have been installed and I can see we may have to do some negotiating around who has the iPad and when.

Anyway will continue to explore the apps available.

As an aside I have been asked to take part in a project at work where mobile devices (iPhones iPads etc) are being interfaced to the clinical systems which will be an interesting experience.

Cheers &
